 | Cimply Putting It… What am I going to wear? Occasionally someone will point out to me that a benefit of being a priest is that you never have to wonder what to wear when you get up in the morning or when you are planning to go out. We don’t have to worry about wearing the wrong thing. Some parents of teenagers were telling me that one of the recent fads is not to wear clothes that are too color coordinated. I guess today it’s okay to wear plaids and stripes together. We wear things to become something. We even have some rules about this. For example: dress the part. A fire fighter does not wear a tutu. A soldier is not dressed like a soccer player. But these are just activities and roles. They communicate a message but only symbolically. A king wears a crown because that’s who he is. A marriage ring is a sign of what a person has become. But still, these are all after-effects. I wear a collar because I am a priest; but the collar does not make me one. Today, Pentecost, is the birthday of the Church. We are told by the Bible that we will be “clothed with power from on high.” It is kind of amazing how it all began. To a group of pretty weak folks Jesus hands over one of the great prerogatives, He gave them His grace and the pledge of eternal glory. Then, as the infomercials says, ‘wait, there’s more.” He tells them to start building the kingdom of God on earth. It’s like handing over one’s retirement account to a kindergartner. However, when God gives, God also guides. God trusted the early disciples and he trusts us. We have been given the life and power of God. It is not about dressing up or playing a game. This is real stuff. Eternity has been handed to us. Happy Mother’s Day. It seems appropriate to honor our Moms as we celebrate the power of the Holy Spirit. I never take for granted the gift God gave me in my Mother. Here’s something that somebody said about Mothers. I think it states well what being a mother is all about. Make it a great week. clc
